Sam & Eva

You may have noticed the "Handy" Monster hanging in the hall by the Art room. This is a collaborative piece of art created by our 1st graders. It started with a tweet by author/illustrator Debbie Ridpath Ohi. She challenged students to take some of her artwork and incorporate it into a collaborative art piece. Her book Sam & Eva was read in Library Skills then in Art class the students worked together to create. We shared pictures of the "Handy" Monster with Debbie and she sent a video thank you to our 1st graders with an inspiring message to write, draw, and read every day.

The story of Sam & Eva is quite cute and about a topic our students can relate to. Sam does not want Eva to add to his drawing, but when the scene comes to life and gets out of control, she helps him escape. We were able to build on the theme of cooperation and collaboration when creating art together.

A big thank you to Mr. Theder and Miss Kapheim for collaborating with me for this project and of course to the very talented first grade students.

Tanner Poets

The first graders learned about haikus during poetry month in April and many wrote their own haiku. The poems were submitted to a poetry contest and some of the students' poems were chosen to be published in the Young American Poetry Digest. The selection panel selects only the best poems that are especially well written for the age level. You can read their poems by scrolling down to the April is Poetry Month post.
