 Caldecott Award

The kindergarten and first grade classes have been learning about award winning books. We found out that Big by Vashti Harrison won the Caldecott Award which is given out by librarians to the book with the best pictures.

The students were able to choose which book they thought should win the Caldecott. The Tanner "Caldecott" winner is In the Night Garden by Carin Berger.
We determined that it is not fair that adults pick the winner since the books are written for kids. Luckily the state of Wisconsin does have an award where kids pick the winner it is the Golden Archer Award.

Golden Archer Award

The kids' choice award has students in Wisconsin nominate books, then the next year they get to vote on their favorite.
These are the books that the kids are choosing from this year. Click on the above image to listen to all of the books.  The students are reminded to be good digital citizen and only go to the sites that their teachers or adults at home tell them they can visit. The Golden Archer readalouds are from YouTube and students were instructed not to click into any other YouTube videos.

4K Exploration

4K has been learning about traditional literature so in 4K Ex we read The Three Little Pigs. The students worked in teams to build houses for the 3 little pigs. Of course they build a straw house, a stick house, and a brick house. The "Big Bad Wolf" came along and blew them over, but not the brick houses.

The Hat

The students in Room A108 recently read The Hat by Jan Brett. After reading the story they designed their own hats. Mrs. Sager had the hats made for the students.

Library Skills and Checkout

Kindergarten started checking out 2 books at a time second semester. This was exciting to many of them. More books, more reading!

During the February 14th rotation kindergarten and 1st grade will need headphones for skills classes. They will be listening to Golden Archer books and voting.

Please return library books early the day before your class's checkout.

New Books

Wolf cub takes her responsibilities very seriously and readers will be surprised as to what those responsibilites are. She brings a little mouse, a rabbit, and a sack of prickle brushes to the Big Wolf's den. Of course the mouse and rabbit do not want to go into the DEN and by the end of the story you learn that the wolf is a DENtist. This book would be great to use with a conversation about dental hygiene.

For all of you waiting for spring here is the latest Grumpy Monkey book where Jim Panzee wakes up feeling silly and Norman suggest he has spring fever. A wonderful story with silly celebrations of springtime along with 25 hidden stiped eggs to find.

Wisconsin First Nations Resources

Wisconsin has a very informative site for resources about American Indian Studies in Wisconsin including a booklist for K-2 books, biography of Electa Quinney, and stories from Native communities around the central Great Lakes. Take a peek if interested.
