 Tanner Golden Archer

The Golden Archer is a kids' choice award where students in Wisconsin nominate and then vote on their favorite book.  Tanner Elementary just finished voting and Who Would Win? Walrus vs Elephant Seal won.  The votes were sent to the Golden Archer committee and the state winner will be announced in March.

Library Skills

In our next three rotations of library skills students will be taking part in Maker Madness. The students will experience various technologies and resources that allow them to use creativity, curiosity, collaboration, and play.

Tanner Book Tournament

The library will be promoting a March Madness Book Tournament that features some of the favorite books from this year. Students will vote via a Google form during skills until we have a winner. With the votes we will nominate Golden Archer books for next school year and find out the favorite at Tanner this year.

Other Notes

  • IT has asked that we continuously check for Chromebook damage and routinely bring damaged Chromebooks to the library for repair. It is helpful to stay on top of it so there is not so many repairs at the end of the school year.
  • Google no longer supports the model of Chromecast that we have in most of our classrooms. As these devices age, we are not able to get same-model replacements. IT strongly encourages users to use a wired connection whenever possible.
  • Zoom will not be included on next year's laptop image. You will be able to use Zoom through the browser.
  • 27 iPads were purchased with Common School Funds and are available for classroom use. That means we have 2 classroom sets of iPads.
  • The PAC has provided us with additional headphones. If you have a student that needs them send them to the library for a pair.
  • This is Sand This is a calming activity to watch the grains of colored sand fall into interesting formations. Try this on your BenQ for whole class fun. Turn up the volume to hear the sand fall.
  • Please have students bring returned library books to the LMC as early in the day as possible.

 Library Skills

The students in kindergarten and 1st grade will need headphones for the February 23rd rotaion. We have been learning about award winning books (Caldecott and Golden Archer), authors and illustrators, fiction and non-fiction (informational), and library location.

Presently we have been reading the Golden Archer books.  This is the best award in my view because it is a kids' choice award. It is only the kids in Wisconsin that nominate the books and then vote on the winner. We will be voting during the next rotation of skills. Our votes will be counted with all the students in Wisconsin and the winning book will be announced in March.

I like the selection of books this year as there are both fiction and non-fiction. From the reaction of the students I would say the Who Would Win? book is a favorite. The books are linked above.

Read Across America Week

The week of February 27 is Read Across America Week. We have dress up days planned with a book for each theme.
The books are linked above or check them out from the library.  Also watch for a special delivery from the library during Read Across America Week.

Other Notes

  • We are always in need of plastic bags if you have any to share.
  • Please return your tan The Adventure Begins library bag from Valentine's Day if you haven't yet.
  • If you want to book your Celebration of Learning in the library Days 4 and 6 are available.

Library News

The Randolph Caldecott medal annually is awarded to the most distinguished American picture book for children. The 2023 Caldecott medal winner is Hot Dog written and illustrated by Doug Salati. An honor winner is Knight Owl  written and illustrated by Christopher Denise.

Tanner students voted on a Mock Caldecott award and the top three are:

  1. Pigeon and Cat by Edward Hemingway
  2. Knight Owl by Christopher Denise
  3. Hot Dog by Doug Salati

First grade students experienced coding with the Beebots. The Beebots introduce children to coding and robotics through exploration-based play.  With a partner they coded the bee to navigate to their favorite "Caldecott" book without running over another book. They used problem solving and cooperation skills.
The next Library Skills rotation will have students learning about the Golden Archer award and voting for their favorite book. This award is a Wisconsin Student Choice Award where the books are nominated by students and voted on by students.
Click on the medal above to see and listen to the nominated books.

The library will be sharing some "Book Love" for Valentine's Day. Look for your delivery of a Valentine's Day themed book in a book bag.  After sharing the book with your class please return it in the bag.

Another digital StickTogether was completed. If you want to use digital StickTogethers with your class ask Mrs. Sager how to get free ones. They can be used to inspire collaboration, to work on fine motor skills,  to practice relaxation and mindfulness, or as a brain break. It could also be used with colleagues as an ice breaker to start a meeting.

Novel Effects

Novel Effect is an app that responds to your voice with interactive music and sound effects, creating magical moments when you read aloud. Books are always being added to the Novel Effect database. It also has book resources for many of the books. For example you could read 100th Day Worries by Margery Cuyler to commemorate the 100th day of school and pair it with some of the activities such as story elements or shapes.

To use Novel Effect

  • Download the app
  • Connect to a blue tooth speaker for a better hearing experience
  • Open the book in the app
  • Click PRINT
  • When you hear the music it is ready for you to read
Novel Effect offers subscription plans, but also offeres unlimited access to "free reads" and limited acces to other select books. Look for the infinity symbol on the book's cover in-app or search free in the app's search bar.

We have been using it in the library and found that the students really enjoy it.

Mrs Kangas is reading Over & Under the Snow by Kate Messner using Novel Effect to 4K.

Mrs Sager is reading Mis It Up! by Herve Tullet to our friends in room A108. This book was very interactive with the students tapping the colors to make new colors.
